Many people desire to pass their values on to future generations but struggle with the how. Simply stating your values may not be enough. Children generally learn best by example, and storytelling is an often-overlooked tool to provide inspiring examples.

A written family values statement expresses ideals like love, compassion, and commitment. However, future generations may be too far removed for value statements to carry sufficient weight. Every person must define their values, but without shared narratives, families miss opportunities to build unity and inspire lasting connections. Stories give your values life.

My grandparents lived in Bergen, Norway, during WWII. Despite the fear brought by the war, my grandparents fell in love and were engaged. They wanted to throw an engagement party but had no eggs to make a cake. My grandmother rode her bike past the German checkpoint to a farm to get eggs. She then smuggled the eggs back past the German checkpoint. They were able to make a cake and celebrate their engagement. Their celebration, made possible by her courage and determination, marked the beginning of a 54-year marriage.

The story of my grandparents has been passed to me and embodies sacrifice, love, resilience, and commitment. If my grandparents had simply told me their values, they wouldn’t have had the same impact. Through their story, these values became real and meaningful, and I have a greater desire to carry them forward because of it.

By passing down stories like these, we do more than just share values—we inspire them. Stories connect generations, helping our children and grandchildren see themselves as part of something greater. They create a sense of belonging, reinforcing the principles that shaped our families while allowing space for each generation to grow and define their path.

If you want your values to endure, tell the stories that shaped you. Share the sacrifices, the triumphs, and the lessons learned. In doing so, you’re not just preserving the past, you’re building a legacy that will inspire and guide your family in the future.
