There is much excitement and financial investment in these tech companies and software. Many have asked if AI is coming for American jobs. This technology is certainly a disruptor, and we want to address the topic of AI replacing wealth advisors and financial planners.

AI can provide simple savings advice and suggest plain-vanilla portfolio allocations according to risk tolerance and age. It does this unemotionally and systematically. While this seems exciting, some interpret its recommendations as a prediction of future economic events. This interpretation would be greatly inaccurate. Its portfolio allocation suggestions are both conventional and general in nature.

Markets are moved by human emotion, not just data. A human investment manager can sense when clients or crowds are overconfident or terrified and adjust or hold steady with that psychology in mind. AI can see volatility, but it cannot fully understand panic. Not every decision is a clean optimization problem. A human can weigh messy tradeoffs, incomplete information, and conflicting goals and say, “Even if the model likes this, it is not worth the risk for this client at this stage of life.”

Regulatory changes, wars, pandemics, elections, corporate scandals, and new technologies all emerge in unpredictable ways. Humans can interpret news, narratives, and second-order effects with context that goes beyond what an algorithm has seen in past data.

Investment decisions are not made in a vacuum. A human manager can tie strategy to a client’s career, marriage, health, children, and values. That means adjusting risk or allocation based on life events, not just age or risk tolerance scores.

AI can model retirement projections, what-if scenarios, and crunch numbers in seconds. However, when projections are effortless and endless, people can easily get stuck tinkering with scenarios instead of making decisions. Optimizing a spreadsheet is very different from managing actual economic events, emotions, and values.

Human advisors can read tone of voice, body language, stress, and fear. A good advisor can talk you out of panic selling, help you stay disciplined in a bear market, and support you through divorce, illness, or job loss. AI can describe what you should do, but it cannot sit with you in the emotion of it.
A human advisor can ask follow-up questions, notice what lights you up, and help you align money with your real priorities: children, charity, faith, legacy, lifestyle. That means not just “optimize this portfolio,” but “what kind of life are you trying to build, and what does money need to do for that life?”

Real life planning is messy. Should you help an adult child financially, or let them struggle a bit for growth? Should you pay off the mortgage or keep investing? How much financial risk can your marriage actually tolerate? Humans can weigh competing goods, unspoken fears, and family dynamics in a way that goes far beyond a model or optimization function.

AI is changing the landscape of tech and American jobs. It will push the workforce in new directions and certainly change the financial services industry. However, AI won’t replace the financial advisor. Rather, financial advisors who use AI will replace advisors who do not. Smedley Financial carefully uses AI in select areas for your benefit and will continue to leverage all tools available to better serve your financial future.

Listen to a deep dive on the Power Up Wealth podcast here.

Artificial intelligence is rapidly growing and continues to become more sophisticated and powerful.
